No classes January 18 – 23, 2023

Three of our four instructors are attending a recertification at Gracie University’s headquarters in Torrance, California starting Wednesday January 18th. We will be back to normal schedule on Tuesday January 24th.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to you and/or your kid(s) week routine, but this training is important to maintain the great level of instruction you and your family deserve while learning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu®.

Thanksgiving Week (2021)

Hello everyone,

Just a heads up there will be no classes Thanksgiving Day.  However, there will be Thursday turkey roll open mat from 10 am to noon – any adult or BBC student may attend.

Regular class schedule the rest of the week.

We’ll be adding some more evening Combatives options and another afternoon Jr. Combatives class at the beginning of the new year – we’ll keep you posted.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

See you on the mat!
JC & the rest of the crew.

We are back!

We are grateful for the support you have given to our beloved school during these crazy times.  We could have not made it without you!

We are happy to announce our new class schedule (effective Monday June 29, 2020).

What’s new? / Before you come to class

We have a new waiver that must be filled out for every student before getting back to the mat.

Kids

  • Arrive to class already dressed in your uniform

Adult students, you too, whenever you can – we understand it is not always possible

All Students

  • Enter and exit through the south entrance (double doors)
  • Leave your shoes outside
  • Immediately use the hand sanitizer by the entrance
  • As you enter, an instructor will check your temperature and give you directions of where to place yourself during class
  • All students will have the option of solo drill, drilling with a partner from home*, or limited partnerships within the class
  • Please limit bathroom visits to emergencies only. Parents, please talk to your children about this matter and the importance of washing their hands before an after using any restroom.
  • Wash your gi after every class (here for how to properly wash your gi)
  • Always follow proper hygiene etiquette (here for our CTC guidelines)

*Contact us for further questions.  Our contact info is at the bottom of every newsletter, and message we send, as well as in our website, and all our social media pages.

Classes will be 50-minutes long to allow us cleaning the mat and bathrooms between classes. Students, as always, we need your assistance to keep the place clean and tidy.

Due to the mere nature of the sport we practice, we have a high standard about all cleaning and disinfecting products we use at Teton Training Center since the first day we opened our school in May 2017.  If you ever want to see a list of the products we use, just ask for one.

Gracie Game Day postponed until further notice

We are open again, but Gracie Game Day is such a big deal, that social distancing during that exciting day would be hard and unfair to our kiddos.  We will send you the information for the makeup day with plenty of notice.

Meanwhile, you still must submit by Thursday 7/02 the tracking-sheet with your signature for the character traits seen during the school’s closure.  Remember, your kid(s) must have earned his/her age X 100 points to be merited with that character’s trait badge.

  • Health (March/April)
  • Respect (May/June)

If you are not ready to attend classes in person yet

We understand not everybody may not feel comfortable attending classes in person just yet. So, we will have Zoom on during our live classes for a while longer. If you would like to attend class this way, email us, so we can send you a class link to the correct address.

The main focus will be in the live classes, but we will set the camera at an angle that it will allow you to continue practicing GJJ from home whether you have a training partner or not.  Solo drills are a great way to improve any technique!

Face-to-face or via Zoom, we can’t wait to see you!
Jess & JC.

Zoom classes for ALL GJJ Programs!

Hey everyone,

We are super excited to announce the commencement of daily Zoom classes for all of our active students in the coming weeks!

We are immensely grateful for your support, and are constantly looking for ways to better serve you. There is no additional fee for this service, and you will continue building credit for tuition payments made during the downtime.

We hope you will see the value in what we are doing so that we may continue to earn your support.   Here is what you can expect with this new program: Official Schedule: We will generate an official class schedule with multiple classes each week for all of our programs: Gracie Combatives, Master Cycle, Gracie Bullyproof and Women Empowered. We’ll be sending you the schedule next week. Live Two-way Video: Zoom meetings are awesome, and since they allow live two-way video, we’ll be able to see you and you will be able to see us. Besides the great connection opportunity this will provide us, this will also enable us to monitor your progress and answer your questions you have in real time!

If you don’t have a Zoom account yet, get a free one here!

No Partner Necessary: We have completely re-structured our entire curriculum so that every Zoom class can be completed with 100% solo participation. If you have a partner, that’s fine, but a partner will not be necessary for any of the lessons we conduct.

5 Elements of Growth: While we were restructuring the curriculum, we realized how many elements of Jiu-Jitsu are regularly neglected during standard partnered practice in group settings. What’s exciting about these Zoom sessions is that we will have a chance to address all the neglected areas: macro movements, micro movements, mobility, mindset and visualization.

100% Class Credit: We are so confident you will make measurable progress, that each time you attend a Zoom session, we will be pulling your attendance card and issuing full credit (check mark) for your participation! We’ll be sending specific details about the Zoom class schedule next week based on the program you are enrolled in. In the meantime, we hope you continue taking advantage of our live weekend webinars and online Gracie University access. If you missed last weekend’s seminars, click here to watch the recordings.

Please add our email address to your contacts so you don’t miss our messages with the private invitations and other updates! gjjdriggs@gmail.com

We miss you, guys!

Hello dear students,

We hope that you are hanging in there at worst, doing great at best.

Earlier this week, head instructors from Gracie CTCs all over the world, had a meeting with Rener & Ryron Gracie to discuss the best steps to continue our Jiu-Jitsu journeys.

Before we get into any of that, here is what our State Government has laid out in regards to businesses reopening – https://rebound.idaho.gov

Idaho will allow gym and facilities like ours to open halfway through May, and we will restart ADULT classes then. We will focus on solo drills and follow all the state’s distancing guidelines.   For those students who are uncomfortable returning to the mat just yet, we will Zoom all classes for you to watch at home.

Children and social distancing do not mix, so kids’ classes will return at a further stage in the states plan, though we may restart the Black Belt Club early & Zoom those classes as well.

Remember, www.GracieUniversity.com is there for you 24/7!  All the details are in Combatives, all the jokes are in MC.  Study up!  Keep that sword sharp.  Their seminars and (live) webinars are worth watching while you have the time.

Guys, we train for worse case scenarios, we prepare to have a calm mind during chaos, so stay calm, survive, defend, escape, control and submit.  Ultimately, we are confident we will submit this opponent and move on to tapping each other again. Until then, stay safe and see you via Zoom.  We will keep sending you emails with updates as needed.

We can’t wait to see you all on the mat again!
Jess & JC.

Temporary CTC Closure

Original published date: March 14, 2020 – 7:00 pm

To our Jiu-Jitsu family,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the temporary cancellation of all Gracie Jiu-Jitsu group classes starting this Monday, March 16, 2020 through March 31, 2020. Depending on information available at the end of the month, we will assess if it is safe to resume classes or if extended closure is necessary.

Even though we’ve had no confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus in our school, the health and safety of our students has, and always will be, our top priority. Based on the latest information available from health professionals surrounding Coronavirus (or COVID-19), we are taking this proactive step to help reduce the spread of the virus.

Tuition Continuation Program

We love Jiu-Jitsu, we love our students, and we love the strong community we’ve created at our school.  As you can imagine, our school relies entirely on the tuition payments of our members to cover the expenses to have the school running.

If we were to freeze or cancel all tuition payments simultaneously, we would almost certainly be forced to permanently close our school after 60 days of downtime (hopefully it won’t be that long).  In order to make sure this downtime has minimal impact on the CTC, and on each of you awesome members that make it all possible –as well as to avoid the risk of permanent closure, with your permission, we intend to keep the monthly tuition payments in place for all active students (keep in mind that 100% of these tuition payments would be credited back to your membership account once we reopen the school).

As a token of our appreciation, we’ll be providing some awesome Jiu-Jitsu benefits during this time (outlined below). We know this is a big request and we recognize the global financial impact of the Coronavirus, so if it is totally unfeasible for you to continue your monthly tuition payments, just let us know.

For those of you who remain on the Tuition Continuation Program, here are some of the exclusive benefits you’ll receive:

100% TUITION CREDIT
First and foremost, students will get full credit to their membership account for all tuition payments made during the closure period. That credit will then be applied in the form of a discount over the 10 months following the reopening of the school (10% of the total credit discounted per month). Going about it this way will greatly reduce the immediate impact on the school while still giving students full credit for every tuition dollar paid during the closure period.

For example, if we are forced to remain closed for 2 months, and you pay $120/month, you would accumulate $240 of credit which would be applied as a $24 discount (10% of the total credit) every month for the 10 months following the reopening of the school.

STREET CHOKE MASTERY SEMINAR
Last month www.GracieUniversity.com released the first-ever Street Choke Mastery Seminar online. This seminar is currently available online for $85, but as a token of our appreciation, all active students will be granted access to the seminar in their Gracie University online lesson libraries for free. This seminar will change EVERYTHING you think about chokes in a street fight!

WEEKLY WEBINARS WITH THE GRACIE BROTHERS
During this downtime, Ryron, Rener, and other head instructors at GU will be hosting regular live webinars on the different positional chapters of Jiu-Jitsu (mount, guard, side mount, etc). The seminars will be very comprehensive and there will be questions and answer opportunities from live viewers. Each time a webinar is scheduled, students on the Tuition Continuation Program will be notified so they can log in and grow with the family.

AT-HOME PROGRESS PROGRAM
Unlike any other Jiu-Jitsu school on the planet, Gracie University has a complete online curriculum that mirrors exactly what is taught in live lessons at the school every day. Utilizing Gracie University’s online system, all students who remain on the Tuition Continuation Program will have the opportunity to study their classes online, learn from home, and earn official class credit for any techniques learned during the closure period. Upon the reopening of the school, students will have the chance to demonstrate the newly learned techniques at a free in-person Verification Seminar, and for each completed lesson that they successfully demonstrate, they will get a check mark on their official attendance card.

During a time when large group gatherings are being advised against, it will be very important for all of us to find activities that we can engage in with family and close friends. Given that Gracie University’s online learning program is the most robust of its kind, and the fact that the online lessons mirror exactly what is taught in our live classes, we have created a special at-home progress program that will allow you to continue your Jiu-Jitsu journey and earn actual class credit (on your attendance card) once the school re-opens, for any and all classes completed during the closure period.

Here is how the process will work for our students:

STEP 1: LOG ON AND LEARN
Log on to www.GracieUniversity.com from any computer or mobile device, to access the online lessons that correspond with the program you are currently enrolled in (if you have trouble logging in let us know and we’ll get you set up). Watch the lessons, and although not mandatory, if possible, practice the techniques with a friend or family member.

STEP 2: TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Keep a simple training log, and each time you complete a lesson (or review a lesson you’ve previously completed), write down the date and the name of the technique(s) learned.

STEP 3: ATTEND A VERIFICATION SEMINAR
Once our school officially re-opens and classes resume as normal, we will host a series of free in-person Verification Seminars at the school for active students in each of our programs: Gracie Combatives, Gracie Bullyproof, Women Empowered and Master Cycle. In these Verification Seminars, you will have a chance to demonstrate the techniques you learned during your at-home study sessions.

STEP 4: GET CREDIT ON YOUR ATTENDANCE CARD
For each technique that you demonstrate correctly (it doesn’t have to be perfect, as long as the core concepts of the techniques are understood) you will get official class credit on your attendance card.

GOT QUESTIONS? LET’S SKYPE!
Regardless of what program you’re in, if at any point during your at-home study/practice, you have a question about a technique, simply send us an email (indicating the preferred time of day for the call) and we’ll set you up with an instructor who can schedule a Facetime (or Skype) video call with you. Naturally the call schedule will be affected by the volume of inquiries but rest assured that we will get to each and every one of you!

ATTENDANCE CARD CONSIDERATIONS
As you know, each of our programs has a unique attendance card on which we track progress for each student. Depending on which program you’re enrolled in, there are some special considerations to keep in mind when it comes to at-home tracking, progress verification, and the issuance of class credit upon the reopening of the school.

GRACIE COMBATIVES CARD CONSIDERATIONS
Since each Gracie Combatives (GC) group class features two separate techniques, GC students will need to learn both techniques in a particular class in order to get a check mark on the card for that class. Issuance of class credit is not limited to new classes you haven’t done before; if you repeat a previously completed class, and you successfully demonstrate it upon your return, you will get a check mark for that class as well. For your reference, we’ve inserted the Gracie Combatives official card below. We’ve highlighted the online lesson numbers for each technique in red, so you can easily locate them when you log on to study from home.

WOMEN EMPOWERED CARD CONSIDERATIONS
Since most Women Empowered (WE) group classes features two separate techniques, WE students will need to learn both techniques in a particular class in order to get a check mark on the card for that class. Issuance of class credit is not limited to new classes you haven’t done before; if you repeat a previously completed class, and you successfully demonstrate it upon your return, you will get a check mark for that class as well. For your reference, we’ve inserted the Women Empowered official card below. We’ve highlighted the online lesson numbers for each technique in red so you can easily locate them when you log on to study from home.

GRACIE BULLYPROOF CARD CONSIDERATIONS
If you are the parent of a child that trains with us, there is a good chance that many of their regular activities (not just Jiu-Jitsu) are, or will soon be, temporarily cancelled. Using the Gracie Bullyproof online program to continue their progress from home is a great way to keep them active around the house while also building the bond between you and your kids. Start by watching the “Parent Preparation Course.” Once completed, move on to the Gracie Games and Jr. Combatives courses. The lessons are short, very fun to watch, and specifically designed to be practiced between parent and child. Keep the at-home sessions short (15-30 minutes) and keep track of each lesson in a log. Upon the school’s reopening, your child will have the opportunity to demonstrate all the techniques they learned from home (with you or with an instructor), and for each technique demonstrated they will receive a check mark on their official attendance card.

MASTER CYCLE CARD CONSIDERATIONS
If you’re an active Master Cycle student, you have been granted access to the Master Cycle online Blue Belt Stripe (BBS) courses that correspond with your rank. If you are a purple belt or higher, you should have access to all four BBS courses. Keep a log of each BBS lesson you complete and upon your return to class you’ll have a chance to demonstrate what you learned. For each lesson that you can demonstrate all the slices/variations, you will get a check mark on your card.

Training Partners
One of the main benefits of training at a school is the plethora of awesome training partners to choose from every day you come to class. Given the circumstances, there’s no doubt that you’ll have fewer partners to choose from, but here are some recommendations that might help.

FRIENDS & FAMILY
If you have friends or family members that you’ve always wanted to introduce to Jiu-Jitsu, now is the time! Chances are they are also experiencing the cancellation of many of their favorite activities so they’ll be much more open to trying something new, especially if it means they can spend more time with you. Just be sure to start them gradually from lesson 1, don’t be overly critical, and praise every bit of progress.

PRIVATE CLASSES
Although all group classes are on hold, as of now we will be able to offer private classes to our students. Whether or not you currently participate in private classes, if this is something you’d like to explore.

JIU-JITSU BUDDIES
Even though large group gatherings are advised against, there is no reason why a small group of healthy people can’t get together to practice Jiu-Jitsu. Use social media to contact your friends from the school and set up small training sessions using the online curriculum as a guide.

GRACIE UNIVERSITY ONLINE STUDENT DATABASE
GracieUniversity.com has over 240,000 online students and we’ve created a very sophisticated member search tool that helps you find people in your community that are also looking for training partners. Give it a try, click here!

GRACIE GARAGES
Gracie Garages are unofficial at-home training centers led by one or more dedicated students who have access to the online curriculum and at least 100 square feet of grappling mats. To search for Gracie Garages near you, or to learn more about starting your own Gracie Garage, click here.

We’re in This Together
One of the greatest benefits of Jiu-Jitsu is that we learn to find comfort in worst-case scenarios. This will be a very tough time for our business, and a very tough time for all our dedicated students who love coming to class as much as we love teaching them. We are in this together and we are determined to make the most of these challenging circumstances.

We can’t thank you enough for your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask. We will be sending out updates to keep you informed of everything on our end.

Sincerely,

JC and Jess Coakley.

Our Contingency Plan

Original published date: March 13, 2020 – 7:00 pm

Dear students and parents of our students,

Over the past few days, we have observed a growing public-health concern regarding the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19.

We are, and will remain, committed to providing the highest level of Jiu-Jitsu instruction in a healthy and safe environment. As of now, we have no immediate plans to close our school, however, if the virus should spread through our region, we will have to consider this option.

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus is a global concern, we have been researching preventative guidelines issued by the World Health Organization and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, Gracie University Headquarters has been in close communication with health care providers and local public health authorities to create a comprehensive plan to ensure the highest level of safety to both: our students and instructors.

Initially, we aimed to gain a better understanding of the Coronavirus and the potential threats the virus may pose to our students as well as the identification of best practices in ensuring our school maintained the highest level of cleaning standards.

As we learned more about COVID-19, it became clear that our school must not only implement every preventive measure possible but must also serve as a source of information to create more awareness about this virus and its potential risks.

What have we learned about the Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

It is widely accepted in the medical community that the first human case of the Novel Coronavirus was detected in Wuhan, China, and has been spreading globally since December of 2019. It is concerning because it is a new strain in the family of Coronaviruses that is showing a very high rate of transmission (R0 Value) for which we have no vaccine.

The current data coming in from over 100,000 cases around the world has shown that the novel Coronavirus symptoms and health risks can be mild in most cases, however, the burden of a significant number of cases requiring medical interventions can be a growing burden on an already taxed health care system.

Medical researchers are clear that Novel Coronavirus brings a more serious health risk to elders, immunocompromised individuals, those with respiratory disease and/or preexisting health conditions.  The medical community agrees that approximately eighty percent of the individuals who contract the virus only experience mild symptoms and recover quickly. The data also indicates that healthy children are the least vulnerable to this new virus.

With our student population built primarily by children and adults ranging from 25 to 45 years of age, the risk of severe health complications is not a concern. What is a concern is how quickly the Coronavirus can be transmitted if proper procedures are not put in place. Recent evidence suggests that the virus may live on certain surfaces at room temperature for several days which makes it imperative that proper cleaning and disinfecting occur on a regular basis.

What can you do?

There are many things you can do as an individual to help prevent the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. Additionally, there are things you can do to raise the level of awareness of this virus, reduce unnecessary fear, and create a level of engagement directed at the prevention of the illness with those closest to you.

BE SMART – Stay informed, be aware of risks, but don’t panic. Use the discipline you learn in Jiu-Jitsu to create enhanced personal hygiene routines in your life. Wash your hands frequently, wash your uniform, and take a shower after practice, avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth, and practice responsible respiratory etiquette. The CDC has put together an excellent website with plenty of information on the Coronavirus www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov.

STAY HEALTHY – This is a crucial time to make your health a priority and do all you can to boost your immunity. This means eat well, sleep well, consider taking additional supplements to boost your immune system.

TRAINING HYGIENE – To protect yourself and your training partners, make sure to sanitize your hands when entering the school before shaking anyone’s hands or touching anything. Instructors and staff will require all students to sanitize their hands before and after every class.

BE A GOOD TEAMMATE – If you are feeling under the weather, if you are coughing or sneezing, if you have a mild fever, headache, or any other cold / flu-like symptoms, take a break from Jiu-Jitsu. Stay home, rest, eat well and see a doctor in case the symptoms worsen.  Remember, if you must miss training, you can log on to GracieUniversity.com and watch the lessons you’re missing through your CTC Family Member account. If you need help accessing your account, just let us know.

TRAVELING FROM AFFECTED AREAS – If you have been in contact with someone who has travelled internationally or you, yourself, have recently traveled internationally, avoid contact with others for the recommended 14 days, observe cold or flu symptoms, and seek medical advice if needed.

What are we doing?

We are focusing on implementing all preventive measures recommended by the World Health Organization, the CDC, and local public health departments. Some of our actions include:

RAISING AWARENESS – Knowledge is power. Our goal is to empower students, and parents by sharing the most updated information about the Coronavirus and effective preventative measures they must take to maintain a healthy and safe training. environment.

TRAINING HYGIENE – We require all students and staff to sanitize their hands when entering the school before shaking hands or touching anything. Instructors and staff will be requiring all students to sanitize their hands before class. We will also be reminding all team members about the obligation to wash their uniforms after class. Remember, always use footwear when going to the restroom.

EXTRA CLEANING – Since there is research that suggests that the Coronavirus may live on surfaces for days, all mat space, restrooms, front desk space, couches, and other high traffic areas, handles, and surfaces of the schools are being cleaned multiple times a day before and after classes. These areas are cleaned with appropriate disinfectants or alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol.

SCREENING – Screening protocols will be implemented at the beginning of work shifts and before classes. If any employee or student appears sick or is visually displaying flu-like symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing, fever, headache, or any other cold /flu-like symptoms, they will be required to immediately leave the training areas and self-isolate at home until fully recovered.

As the Coronavirus situation continues to evolve, we will be regularly communicating with our students to offer updated guidance based on new guidelines issued by the World Health Organization, CDC, and local health authorities.

Keep training, don’t be afraid or panicked but also don’t be indifferent to the risks. Stay off the mats if you are not feeling well or suspect that you might be a carrier, until you are deemed healthy.

We must continue to work together as a team and in collaboration with our local health departments. We must remain engaged to slow down the transmission of this or any other disease to ensure a healthy and safe learning environment.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

JC and Jess Coakley.

We had so much fun at the Women Empowered® seminar!

January 11, 2020

Thank you for letting us share a little bit of Women Empowered® with you!  We hope our quick seminar inspired you to invest time in learning ways to protect your most valuable asset: your own safety.

As we mentioned at the beginning of the event, Women Empowered® is the reason we started doing Jiu-Jitsu back in the winter of 2014/2015. We fell in love with the Gracie system.  After we finished the program, we wanted more… so much more, that here we are -5 years later- the proud owners of the only Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (GJJ) Certified Training Center (CTC) in all Idaho!

If after the seminar you are still not sure about the program, we would like you to know that most martial arts schools offer only one or two free classes. All Gracie CTCs, including ours, offer a 10-day trial, so you can attend as many classes as your schedule allows within those 10-calendar-days. That includes both beginners programs: Gracie Combatives® (co-ed) and Women Empowered®.

If you don’t love the environment and the lessons, no hurt feelings, and you’ve learned a few extra tips in self-defense!  BTW, you can start attending classes whenever.  No need to wait for “class # 1” as the curriculum is designed on purpose this way, so anyone can join in at any given time!  To see our classes schedule visit: https://tetontrainingcenter.com/schedule/

We always encourage you to fully research your options to find what is best for you.  What better way than taking classes first hand?  Our door is always open, and we welcome any question(s) you might have.

Again, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us.

We are looking forward to seeing you again on our mat!
